Governor Margaret Gardner has sought to be excused from the mention hearings. She didn’t show up to the last one, where she requested to be excused but Djuran Bunjileenee said no. “If the Governor can do that, then anybody else can do that too – if that’s a precedent she wants to set!”
Government House sits a few hundred meters away from the ceremonial fire at Camp Sovereignty that supports the protection for the Resting Place of ancestral bones from the 38 Sovereign Nations of what is now know as ‘Victoria’.
On 26 January 2025, Crime Scene Australia delivered a Cease and Desist notice to the Governor due to an advertised flag raising event. The Australian flag featuring the British Union Jack is a symbol of terrorism for Aboriginal people and is colloquially known as “the Butchers apron” by Indigneous people around the world who have experienced the bloodshed of their lands being brutally stolen and occupied by the British.
Key to this case is the question of how the land occupied by Government House was obtained when this was the first Aboriginal Reserve in the area.
